I would’ve written about this earlier, but I’ve been drunk for like 5 straight days. So I had to save it all for one post.
Tuesday night I got down with Duran Duran at Roseland, which was actually pretty fun. Comedic at times…but overall fun. My only complaint is that it dragged on a little and they didn’t play Come Undone... what the hell is that all about? But there was 10 minutes of pure joy in there somewhere…which I can’t say about alot of shows I see.
Wednesday was Kevin Drew and BSS at Webster. One of the highlights of ‘07 for me. First time I’ve seen them in a club and it was awesome. Like really really really awesome. They were all very drunk and clearly having a blast the entire time. Emily Haines from Metric came up for 7/4 Shoreline… which was my highlight of the show until KD decided to start collecting clothing from the audience and did Major Label Debut with about 30 coats, scarves and sweatshirts on.
Then after the song, he proceeded to give each of the items back calling one by one, by having people claim their items; “This is yours, like for real? Don’t fucking lie to me man, this whole thing only works if you tell the truth.” Classic. At the end of the show he decided to go all high school counselor on us: “Fuck texting, don’t let Guiliani be fucking president. And let confusion be your guide, its not a bad thing.” Whatever you say man… just keep making great music and I’ll do anything you want. Except that one thing with the gerbil… get your head out of the gutter KD.
Thursday – no shows to report but my Mavs dominated San Antonio. So, uhm, Spurs fans….you can now go back to mowing my lawn in silence. Thank you.
And the icing on the cake….Friday was Spiritualized at The World Famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. This will go down as one of my all time favorite shows. Ever. He hasn’t been in the states in years and really doesn’t have much of a presence here to speak of. But the guy is a freakin legend in the UK, and I now understand why. J Spaceman played to the over appreciative crowd, backed by a 4 piece string section and 5 gospel singers. Anything I could attempt here praising the show wouldn’t do it justice, so I’m really not gonna try. Plus I really gotta take a 2 right now, so I’m trying to wrap this thing up. But I will say that I haven’t felt this way about a show since the first time I saw Radiohead. The highlight was Ladies and Gentlemen…, which is below for your listening pleasures. It is the same version they played live, with the gospel choir singing Fools Rush In in the background. He played the crowd favorite about half way through the set and received a standing ovation. Absolutely incredible.
