Hailing from the far reaches of Canada, psychadelic prog rockers Black Mountain have made yet another splash with their second release In the Future. Make room Josh Homme – Queens now has company in its exclusive club of stoner rockers. Fans of Kings of Leon, Black Sabbath, Wolfmother and The Flaming Lips will surely find solace in the layered sounds of Black Mountain, which are full of intricate song structures, plenty of headbanging metal riffs and ambient melodies echoing through the voices of male and female co-vocalists. Though their self-titled album in 2005 earned them an opening slot on tour with Coldplay (strange pairing, I know), In the Future clearly has them riding a wave of long-overdue success. Already slated for a Sunday gig at SXSW, the road is bright for these motivated hippies from up north. A recent issue of Rolling Stone even mentions their brush with Wayne Coyne at a gig in OKC a couple of years ago, in which Oklahoma’s favorite son of rock was in the front row rockin’ out to the Black Mountain set. The band’s next visit to the Sooner State led to a slumber party at the head Flip’s crib, complete with bubble machines and all… surely some good times were had there.
