After years of endless searching, I’ve finally found the answer to the question that’s been on everyone’s minds — who created the disco? That would be the one and only Calvin Harris.
I too once thought disco originated decades ago in dance clubs with the likes of the brothers Gibb and KC and the band of sunshine, but apparently, Calvin’s the man responsible for it all. Yes I know, people would kill for my information… So who exactly is Calvin Harris you ask? He’s just a humble Scottish lad making all kinds of noise in the UK with his funked-up electroclash debut album I Created Disco.
He’s so fresh across the pond that he’s slated to produce Kylie Minogue’s next album. (Not sure I’ll be in line at the record stores for that one, but it’s worth a mention for a 23-year-old DJ who just got his big break via MySpace a little more than a year ago.) Since then, Calvin’s has gone on to remix tracks for Jamiroquai and the aforementioned Ms. Minogue, along with a catchy tribute to the King of Pop for the Mitchell Brothers, simply titled “Michael Jackson.” Fans of Groove Armada and Daft Punk would certainly appreciate his sound. Calvin also lays down the vocals on most of the tracks on his album, which are quite deep and compelling. Maybe not in the deep or compelling sense, per se, but they’re pretty fun and cheeky. Here he is bragging about how big of a pimp he is.
Despite some redundancy with the loops at times, I Created Disco does feature a few standout tracks that are already being spun ‘round the world. Think of Calvin Harris as the ‘80s-era homeless guy’s James Murphy who has self-proclaimed himself the new King of Disco — the makings of a future headliner indeed.
