Yes, I know the Red Monroe show at Mohawk was 10 days ago, but I’ve got plenty of excuses (the cat peed on my computer?). In the end, I just felt like there was no way that I could let this show go by without a little recap, punctuality be damned.
The ‘Hawk was rockin’ for Eric Steele and his merry band of Dentonites as they displayed the rock-star reputation that preceded them. Compared to the two bands that opened for them that night (The Hourly Radio and Prayers for Animals), these guys know their way around the stage and how to bring the house down. Focusing mainly on their latest release, ¡Policia! ¡Policia!, Red Monroe treated the small gathering to a full-on jam-fest highlighted by my personal faves, Sunday Papers and Sundown Shade. Steele’s distinctive vocals are what set this band apart from your every-day indie band, and what make Red Monroe a must-see whenever they visit your town. Highly recommended.
Of course, the night wasn’t over with Red Monroe’s set. Austin’s Built By Snow had their CD release party that night, and took the opportunity to show off their, er, high-energy style. After taking the stage in full-body NASA jumpsuits, Snow proceeded to tell us between every song how they were “rocking our fucking heads off”. Whether or not my head actually fell off is debatable, but I was able to snag some exclusive concert footage:
