I’ve found that a good source for new tunes these days is the common car commercial. Take, for instance, the Saturn VUE commercial with all the rich people set to a beautiful guitar riff (click ‘Watch the TV Ad’ in the bottom right). After doing a little research, I found that the song was Higher by Soundcage. From what I heard on the commercial, they sound like a cool band, could be some potential there.
The real story happened along the way to finding Soundcage. I happened upon Conner, who had apparently done another commercial with Saturn last year. A short visit to their myspace convinced me that I needed to own this music. Conner hails from near the dead center of the US (Lawrence, Kansas), and as such, seems to have developed a sound that’s equally influenced by a number of different sources. The most obvious comparison for me is to The Strokes, mostly because the vocals are very similar and the guitar play seems to fall in the same range, but they also seem to be heavily influenced by The Killers, The Cure, and even The Rolling Stones. Listening to their album has consumed me for the last hour.
Alas, some of you probably don’t have complete confidence in me and buy whatever music I tell you to buy, so luckily I can provide you with a stream of the whole stinkin’ CD. This shit’s so good I’m thinking of buying a Saturn as a thank you.
