Last night I checked out an advance screening of the new Jason Reitman (Thank You for Smoking) movie, Juno. The movie, which debuted to very strong reviews at the Toronto Film Festival, stars Michael Cera and Jason Bateman of Arrested Development, Jennifer Garner and newcomer (at least to me) Ellen Paige. It’s basically a simple story of an unexpected teenage pregnancy and the family who may or may not adopt the infant. It was easily the best movie I have seen this year (with the only close competition being American Gangster), and one of the funnier movies I have seen in a long time. Rainn Wilson has a killer cameo at the beginning, so don’t be late..
Part of what makes the movie so great is how perfectly the soundtrack compliments the movie (think Garden State or Little Miss Sunshine). Many of the songs included in the film were contributed by Kimya Dawson (who was recommended to the director by Ellen Paige herself), who used to be part of The Moldy Peaches. The songs echo the mood of the film all the way through, lightening up what could have been a more serious subject.
There are many more advance screenings before the movie is released in mid-december. Find one near you, RSVP here and check out a sampling of the soundtrack below…
