Beirut, the eight-piece Gulag Orkestar led by Zach Condon, has announced the release date for their third album under Ba Da Bing, The Flying Club Cup: October 9th. The album will feature Final Fantasy frontman, Polaris Prize Winning Owen Pallett. Condon, on the origination of the new album name:
“Back in the early 1900s, like the 1910s or 1920s, there used to be this hot air balloon festival in Paris—it’s titled after that and after this very bizarre 1910 photo I found [by Leon Gimpel]. It’s one of the first color photos ever made, at the World’s Fair, and it…shows all these ancient hot air balloons about to take off in the middle of Paris. I just thought it was the most surreal image I’d seen in a long time.”
To be honest, I don’t care if he named it after the singing cups from Beauty and the Beast. Never saw the movie…ahhhh just read about it…in a magazine. Enjoy the SXSW recording of “A Sunday Smile,” thanks to Hate Something Beautiful.
