With the start of ACL 2007 now a week away, I thought I’d focus my attention on some bands that I say fall into the “electropunk” genre. Their songs usually feature a mixture of keyboard and guitars, and they usually put on pretty amazing shows. Of course, the king of this genre at ACL will be Ghostland Observatory, but since we already previewed them, let’s take a look at a few other bands that are definitely worth seeing…
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! – These Brooklyners have cemented their spot in electropunk lore with their latest release, Some Loud Thunder, though they play such a wide array of music that it’s tough to label them in just one category. CYHSY is another band that I think everyone will be talking about next week. Like Gotan Project, CYHSY has a killer time slot, playing in the dead period between Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire on the next stage over. Sounds too good to be true.
LCD Soundsystem – What happens when a major label producer decides he’s going to make his own music? Apparently, you get LCD Soundsystem, the kind of band that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. James Murphy’s pet project is the perfect symbol of what electropunk is all about, and is sure to be one of the top acts of the whole festival. They’ll be on from 5:30-6:30 Friday night.
The Killers – They’re not really all that electropunk, but they did help make keyboards cool again for rock bands, so I’m putting them in this category. And because I’m lazy. Anyways, they’re playing from 8:15-9:30 Friday night opposite Bjork. I know, tough choice.
